Blog #10 - White King, Red Rubber, Black Death

So far, you guys have studied how Africa had grown as a multi-ethnic continent with different tribes and thousands of languages before the Europeans came to become the crossroads for trade and commerce like it is today.

The northern African countries, the ones that have had the most interaction with Europe (good and bad) like Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Tunisia and Egypt are more economically advanced than their sub-Saharan brethren. Those countries that lie South of the Equator are the ones that we will focus on for most of our imperialism unit in Chapter 24 and revisit before the end of the semester.

The British and the French were the two biggest colonizers of sub-Saharan Africa, but the Belgians, Germans, Dutch and Portuguese also carved up the continent after 1800. This period is known as the "new imperialism" - as if the time period of slavery when up to possibly 20 million Africans were stolen from the continent and shipped over to the Americas was somehow "old" imperialism and this was more "enlightened" because the Euros didn't sell humans and instead sold the resources? Yeah, right.

Some of the worst abuses of Africans were done by the Belgians in the resource-rich Congo. The Belgians extracted tons of rubber (this is where the title of our blog comes from), copper and ivory. Those villages who didn't harvest enough rubber would have children or sometimes women lose a hand. This was when the king himself, Leopold II, owned the Congo, until 1908 when the outrages over such treatment forced him to give it up. To quote a BBC documentary with the same name as our blog, "Until Adolf Hitler arrived on the scene, the European standard cruelty was set by a king."

One thing that is included in your history book that was never included in the stuff that I learned was info from the Africans' points of view. The best examples are in Ch. 24, sec. 2, on p. 754-5 and p. 759-761. I had seen a movie about Shaka Zulu but it really was more about the brave whites who had to take on the Zulus in the scary war in southern Africans. I never got to learn the "other side" of the story or the Africans' side of the story unless I watched Roots which came out when I was 9 (in 1977, I think) or read stuff on my own.

As Americans, we can't claim any kind of moral superiority over the Europeans because of the U.S.'s genocidal policies enacted towards our Native Americans.

Your questions:
1. Why did Europeans colonize Africa in the 1800s?
2. Why do you think America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th Century?
3. Do you think that the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today might have anything to do with their previous colonization? Why or why not?

1. Europeans colonized Africa in the eighteen hundreds because the industrial revolution caused them to be short on natural resources and they had to go to Africa to get things like rubber and petroleum.
2. America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the nineteenth century because they had recently won their independence in the late seventeen hundreds and was having its own governmental struggles in the early and mid eighteen hundreds. Plus, America had a lot of resources and land for their growing population to use. There was no economic advantage for the Americans going to Africa.
3. Yes, I think that the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today has to do with their previous colonization. I believe this because the European’s division of the countries which they stole natural resources from created a society where the natives were second class citizens, which led to many of the current issues in sub-Saharan Africa. As the different regions gained back control of their countries they had to recover from all of the years of abuse and learn how to establish fair governments. This left them behind other countries who were not having to recover their original identity.

Why did Europeans colonize Africa in the 1800

Firstly they exploited the land and the people for their own ends...for crops, minerals, and slaves. Later they believed that Africans needed to to be governed and raised in their own image, This is why most Europeans told Africans to forget about old traditions and follow Europeans, this is when Christianity came into the picture for most Africans.Europeans did all this for money. they wanted whatever raw materials they might find, and as well as the possibility of land for them to settle onto if they needed more space, Basically just expanding more.

Why do you think America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th Century?

I am guessing that America didn't want to do anything with this because they might have thought that they could have been dragged into all this. They also thought that the Africans would get mad at them for trying to exploit them. so in this cse they wanted no part in this, also, the americans had the US henocidal policy enacted towards the native american..so in this way its not like the amercans were anybetter than europeans at the time..

3. Do you think that the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today might have anything to do with their previous colonization? Why or why not?

I think they just might have something to do with the previous colonization because its not like you lose verything you once had. there might still be at least a little bit of the same colonization as what it used to be.but if there is, it would probably be caused because of the laws and customs..

1) The Europeans colonized Africa in the 188s because in Africa there was discovery of oil, would give them more land to teach there religions, and more resources.
2) I think America stayed away from Africa and Asia in the 19th century because of the wars over land and resources and America didn’t want to get into any wars.
3) Yes: they should have waited longer to colonized later when they had a better government more people better money flow and a better leader.

1. The europeans colonized Africa in the 1800s because they needed more resources. They aquired rubber, ivory, petroleum, etc. from the African countries that they moved in to. The industrial revolution caused a shortage in spplies needed and Africa had a surplus of them.

2. I think America did not get involved with AFrica because they didn't need the resources. The country was relatively new and didn't need them yet. America also did not want to fight another war in the early 1800s because we had just won a war, and did not have a strong enough military to defend themselves if we got involved. America was not a huge power then, and did not need to be other than in the Americas.

3. I think that the state of the economic and politics in sub-Saharan states was influenced by the colonization. The colonization led to uprisings and rebellions against countries like Britain. Since they would not have a strong leader after the rebellions were won, more would occur. The countries would be in chaos, much like how we hear they are today. Like the genocide in Sierra Leone. Without a continuous strong leader position, whether it be one person or a government, the country will never be out of conflict over the land and its ownership.

1. Why did Europeans colonize Africa in the 1800s?
By the 1800s, most of Europe had already been explored and colonized. So naturally based upon location, Europeans went to Africa because it was fairly close by. The Europeans wanted more natural resources for their developing technologies. Also, they liked to conquer and control things so this would give them opportunities.
2. Why do you think America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th Century?
America stayed away from Africa and Asia for several reasons. First they were dealing with their own issues. There was a lot of land to explore in North America, and pretty much unlimited natural resources as they moved west. There was also a lot of fighting within the U.S as the government was being established. (Civil War, War of 1812). Another reason to stay away was that there wasn’t transportation to get to Africa or Asia quickly.
3. Do you think that the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today might have anything to do with their previous colonization? Why or why not?
The current state of sub-Saharan countries has to be based upon previous colonization because we have learned that everything is based upon history. Much of that colonization, was based upon certain favorable tribes and the getting rid of those people that you didn’t want. Now, as everything starts to blend together, these countries are way behind the times in establishing governments and fair policies. People don’t forget how they were treated in the past and still have to overcome the unfair treatment.

1)To me, European contact is what sparked the need for colonization. This is when European explorers started pushing their way into Africa. After these explorers came missionaries who wanted to spread Christianity throughout Africa.

This is when Europe scrambled to colonize Africa. There were many riches on the Congo like copper, rubber, and ivory that many people wanted to obtain. Another reason was that people like Leopold wanted to "carry the light" in order to help create a better era.

2) I think America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th century because at the time there was so much countries scrambling to colonize countries. To America, this may have seemed too overwhelming for America to jump right into, so they tried to remain as out of the situation as they could. They may also not have wanted to risk anything by getting involved with other counties that in some ways may be more powerful and could win wars.

3) I think that the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today may have something to do with previous colonization. I think that when all the countries outside of Africa came in and colonized parts of Africa, it caused "splits". I also think that once they were colonized, the African people weren't treated as a first priority, which may have led to problems currently being faced now. This also made it hard for them to "come back" in a way because they had to regain everything that they lost, which wasn't that easy.

Europeans colonized Africa in order to preserve the resources they had left after the industrial revolution. This however although preserved resources like petroleum, it exploited the land and its people which brought Christianity into the picture.
I think that America stayed away from Africa and Asia in the nineteenth century because it too was recovering from government issues. They did not take it on because the last thing they needed were more problems, especially ones that had an affect on their resources. This would have a chain reaction causing an affect on the population as well. I also think that it did not make sense for them to go because there would be no gain for them. They were better off just to sit back and recover while allowing their population to continue to grow.
I think that that the current economic and political state that many sub-saharan countries are in to day somewhat has to do with its colonization of earlier times. I think this because people’s customs and traditions, although maybe looked down upon by others, are still used today no matter what the time is. I think that their ways and beliefs will show through no matter what kind of government is running them in difficult situations. Their colonies define them as who they are.

2. America stayed away from Africa and Asia because they won ther independecne and they wantd to keep the resources they had and not waste the money
3. Yes, beause with out some of those colonizatins they probally wouldent find some of the resources they needed

I think America stayed away from Africa because they didn’t want to get involved in all the revolutions in all the colonies of Europe. And they didn’t want to waste money on war effort and sending soldiers across the Atlantic Ocean. And at the time America was expanding and getting land. And I think they stayed away from Asia because they don’t really know anything about them and they don’t want to waste money on something they don’t know about. And they are trying to protect there homeland and build up there army and navy.

3. Yes, I do think that the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today might have something to do with their previous colonization. I think this because, at the time, when they previously colonized, the countries did not have enough of a stable government. They could have had a better outcome by waiting until they gained more money. Looking at the political aspect, it would have been better if, at the time, the countries had a better leader to help with a lot of things.

1.Europeans colonized in Africa in the 1800s because there were the riches of the Congo, which included copper, rubber, ivory, and many other, that was exploited by King Leopold II and other wealthy Belgians. Britain took over the land that was very rich in many resources, in places like West and East Africa. Britain also discovered gold and diamonds in the places that they settled in. Other European countries joined in on all of this colonizing to try and strengthen their national image. They also were trying to advance their economic growth and influence. Some Europeans settled in countries that were part of the transatlantic slave trade to try and abolish slavery. They also helped some of the freed slave settle in Africa again.
2.America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th Century because they didn’t want to get into any wars with the other continents. Also, America was going through their own Civil War, during 1812.
3.The current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today might have something to do with their previous colonization because the former European countries that settled there in the 1800s brought their advanced technology and government to the sub-Saharan countries.

The Europeans colonized Africa because they felt that god wanted them to spread their borders and the borders of Christianity into the world, (Mainly to attack the spread of Islam.) They also were tempted by the history of gold, silver, bronze and other valuable metals. I think there were three reasons America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th Century. First because they enough problems as is and just were not ready to get into another war with the British and now other European countries, the second is that they did not want to become like the British in controlling overseas colonies and third even if they wanted to become like the British they didn’t have the navy or the money the British had to be the way they were. I do think that some of the current economic and political state in many sub-Saharan countries are in today might have something to do with their previous colonization. Some of the things that would be the fault of the European’s, is that they deepened on them (the Europeans) for so long they didn’t know how to take care of themselves when the Europeans left them. But after awhile it started to become their fault, this is because there was no progress made, it took many years for any of the countries to be at all successful, and some of them still aren’t.

Europeans colonized Africa in the 1800’s mainly for the resources. It was a land that hadn’t really been explored yet and there were many curiosities. Africa was very rich in resources, as you explained in the blog. The resources included rubber, minerals, metals, and even people, which were shipped to the Americas and sold as slaves. I think America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th Century because of all the drama going on. There were many problems with the corrupt government and the economy that I don’t think America wanted to get involved with. I do think the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today has something to do with their previous colonization. The way the countries were just stormed in and taken over set the tone for the rest of that country’s history. Their resources were taken away from them by another influence. The people were severely mistreated. As you mentioned in the blog, children and women’s hands were cut off if they did not provide enough rubber. The governments were corrupt and the countries were poor, and no one did anything about it. I think that had a huge influence on what condition the countries’ governments and economies are in now.

Europeans colonized Africa in the 1800’s because of its resources. When I say resources I mean slaves, ivory, and copper. Europeans moved over to Africa and started capturing and shipping slaves known as the triangle trade; when they took slaves and shipped them to Europe and then from there they shipped them to America and all over. I believe that America stayed away from Africa and Asia because they didn’t want to get really involved with the conflicts that had been going on in Asia and Africa at that time so maybe they decided just to stay to their own conflicts and problems going on at the same time. I do believe that many sub-Saharan countries have problems today because of previous colonization. When many of the countries became populated they started facing many problems such as poverty and people being captured and being sold off as slaves. I believe that over the years the conflicts that some countries have faced just keep growing and growing into bigger more difficult problems. Maybe if colonization back then hadn’t brought up so many new problems those countries really might not be in some of the situations that they are in to this day.

I think the Europeans wanted to colonize Africa because 1800s because African were looked upon as ignorant people compared to the Europeans because they had two totally different types of culture than the Europeans. Also I think the Europeans wanted to show the world how great Europeans were because the trained “savages”, also I think they wanted to take advantage of Africans ignorance and make them work for them. I think America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th century because in 1914 a world war was started by the Ottoman Empire. Also about two and a half decades before the world war there had been genocide between Turkish nationalists and minority peoples who sought their own states, so maybe the Europeans figured to stay out of it. Also the in some parts of Europe and Africa the British had control over a piece of land it seemed like the Ottoman empire was next door, so the British didn’t want to fights with of its neighbor. I think current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today might have something to do with their previous colonization because even though you can start fresh its hard to get, and keep everything on track, especially when it was never “together” in the first place. But the good news is the extreme poverty rate in the sub-Saharan has reduced about 5%.

1. Europeans colonized Africa in the 1800s because there were many trade treaties that could be made. There were also a few appealing Rivers there as well, such as the Nile, the Congo, and the Niger. Natural resources were also a factor, which Europeans needed, such as rubber, petroleum, and ivory.
2. 2. I think America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th century because they were experiencing problems with slavery at the time, and America had previously gotten slaves from Africa, which caused problems. America also experienced a civil war later in the 1800s, so getting involved with other countries at that time could cause the two sides of the war to split up more. If either the North or the South tried to control parts of Africa or Asia, the war could of gotten those countries involved as well. I think America just stayed away to solve their own problems.
3. I think the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today might have to do with their previous colonization. When Europeans were colonizing Africa, they didn’t let Africans go to the Berlin Conference or have a say in who controlled them. I think this could of led to the poverty and lack of a strong leader some of these countries face today. Past events always have an impact on what happens to the future, and I think the same is true for this situation.

The Europeans colonized Africa, because they wanted to have more territory in each of their empire, so they went to colonize as much land as possible, like Africa, the Americas and some parts of Asia. The Europeans also colonized Africa because they were like in a race between the countries in Europe to see who own more land, these was manly between the bigger countries like Spain, France, Germany, England. America stayed away from African and Asia during the 19 century, because it was just starting on its on, and it had to build its economy and government, and also they didn't have enough money and time to go across the world to colonized Asia or Africa, so Europe was the only one colonizing the land. The current economic and political status that many sub-Saharan countries have today has to do with the previous colonization, because they didn't have the resources or the experience from the Europeans so they took longer to build up any kind of government, or economy that the other part of Africa, that is closer to Europe, had already with the colonization from the Europeans. And because they took longer at the beginning, they’re current economy is a little behind compare to the northern parts of Africa.

1) Europeans colonized Africa in the 1800s because Europe wanted to gain control of lands in Africa for trade and some wanted to spread christianity. They also wanted to boost there national image and improve there economic growth and influence.
2) I think America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th century because if America got involved, Africa and Asia would start to fight against America due to Asia wanting the land from Asia and Africa fighting for there land. This would also cause problems for America cause at the time in the 19th century America was still developing and if they got into afairs with Asia and Africa they would be in trouble.
3) Yes i think it would have to do with there previous colonization because whoever started these colonizations helped out that sub-Saharan country prosper and leaders who ruled these countries followed these rules. For example, China is very wealthy due to there trade and technology. Some of China's technology is used for medical purposes and entertainment devices, like video games.

1. Europeans colonized Africa in the 1800s because it was weak and it had a lot of resources that they could use and take at their leisure. They had a strong military and knew that they could take over African nations if they chose to.
2. America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th century because they were a newly independent nation and they already had problems in their own country without going to another country. They faced wars of their own in 1812 and 1861. They were also busy exploring and expanding their new territory.
3. Yes I do think that the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today might have had something to do with their previous colonization because before, they had plenty of resources that they could export and import but then Europeans came in and basically drained them of those resources making it very difficult for them to make a profit exporting things.

1. Europeans colonized Africa because they wanted to spread imperialism and gain the resources they had in Africa. Also the slave trade would make many wealthy people even more wealthy. Belgium used the gold mines in their colony in the Congo to create profit for the Belgian Government, while the workers got nothing. The British also took parts of Africa rich in resources.

2. America stayed away from Africa and Asia I think because they didn’t want to get involved. They weren’t interested in an empire, and they had to manage their own lands. They didn’t want to be occupied with some colony in Africa while they were trying to figure out stuff back at home, like industry and government.

3. The state they’re in now probably has something to do with previous colonization. Before the European powers came, they were able to self govern and make modernizations at their own pace. When the Europeans came in, they took their workers and used them to their own gain, not letting them have any profits. So when they overthrew the Europeans and created new government, they had to start from scratch and build it back up. Where they are now is a result of having to do that.

1.) Why did Europeans colonize Africa in the 1800s?

In our class right now, obviously, we are learning about Africa. So far, we have learned that Europeans colonized Africa in the 1800s for many reasons. Some wanted the resources and slaves that existed in the land; others just wanted the land itself. Some wanted to help the Africans, and helped them to become more modernized.

2.) Why do you think America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th Century?

I think that America stayed away from Africa and Asia during this time period for many different reasons. One was that they had been dealing with their own problems at the time, being that they had recently been through a war, and were dealing with problems with their Government. Another is that they probably didn’t want to be part of the conflicts between Africa and Europe. One more reason is that they had enough resources, so why bother with Africa’s when they have their own?

3.) Do you think that the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today might have anything to do with their previous colonization? Why or why not?

I think that the current economic and political state of these countries is because of previous colonization because after the abuse they suffered, the sub-Saharan countries didn’t recover much. They don’t have a strong government or leader, and no one to control what happens.

Europeans colonized Africa in the 1800s mainly because of the resources. These would include rubber, copper, ivory, and slaves. Most of the resources came from Congo, which was abused by the Belgians and King Leopold II. Also, European countries wanted to expand their land into Africa. This could be done by teaching their religion in Africa.
America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th century because they had their own economic and political issues at this time. America had no need for the extra resources they would get by coming into Africa. America had plenty of resources during all of this. There was no need for America to get involved with the issues in Africa and risk going to war. Also, America had its Civil War in 1812.
Yes, I do think that the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today has to do with their previous colonization. The European countries that settled in Africa in the 1800s introduced some new technology, which would influence their economic state. Many resources were taken by the European countries which also would’ve influenced the economy from then on. The experience of Europeans settling and invading most likely forced African countries to create a stronger government.

1. The Europeans colonized Africa in the 1800’s because they found lots of resources like rubber, copper, and ivory that could be taken with ease.

2. I think that America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th century because they were having their own problems, didn’t have much power, and had plenty of resources at their own expense.

3. I think that the economic and political conditions today in the sub-Saharan countries has everything to do with their previous colonization because if they hadn’t been colonized all the resources wouldn’t be depleted, less rainforest would be destroyed, the population would be MUCH larger, and the government systems would be different because Leopold wouldn’t have ever imposed his reign over the countries.

1) The Europeans colonized Africa in the 1800’s because Africa had many goods that Europe wanted and needed (such as ivory, rubber, and petroleum). The Industrial Revolution caused shortage in goods and supplies and Africa had everything Europe needed and more. You always want to become more powerful. Many countries in Europe had the desire to conquer the world, especially France and Spain. Knowing that Africa is nearly three times larger than Europe, Africa seemed like the right place to colonize. If I was european around this time, I would probably wish to colonize Africa as well.

2) America stayed away from Africa and Asia because at this time, America was a relatively new country. We had no business getting involved with huge continents like Africa and Asia. We would gain nothing from it. As a new country, we had all the resources we needed. We were not a superpower, but we also were not the poorest country in the world. We were fine how we were.

3) Yes, I think that the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today have something to do with their previous colonization. I think this because many natural resources were stripped from sub-Saharan countries to a certain extent, and also people native to these lands were not as educated as the Europeans. Therefore, when the Europeans left, there were many uneducated people trying to run a government which led to corruption and many troubles.

Question 1: Europeans colonized Africa because Europe finally gained more powerful and centrally governed nation states were stronger. The Industrial Revolution also helped by advancing their military and economic power. With most of Europe’s problems settled, they started for an aggressive path towards expansion.
Question 2: America didn’t colonize Africa because they were busy fighting each other in a civil war. The civil war didn’t involve any other country, so European countries could advance while America struggled to get into a stable government. Even after the war America had to take time to set the government and economy back up because of all the money used in the war.
Question 3: Yes, I think that the imperialism from Europe and America delayed Africa’s Economy and government, but it also helped because they brought new technology to the Africans like guns to hunt. The fact that Europe and America killed, captured, and conquered Africans and their land did not help them advance. If Africa did not experience imperialism then they would have been able to find their own technology and stay away from poverty in the future. Even in the future Africa wouldn’t have as advanced technology as others because they were still only using arrows and spears when others were using Gun power weapons.

1. There are several reasons that the Europeans colonized in Africa. One reason was that was for trade reasons. The Europeans were estimated to have traded at least twenty million Africans at the time. Another thing they valued was rubber from the trees that grew in Africa. They also valued the oil (which would later be used for cars; so would rubber) there.
2. I think that the Americans stayed away from Africa and Asia during because they most likely saw all this “Super powers” in that area and did not want to interfere. Another reason is that they had just fought a war of its own and didn’t have the time or money or needed goods and soldiers to go overseas to claim there piece of land in Africa. Another reason might have been that they were a Christian nation at the time and they thought that it was wrong to basically take away what the people had known and grown up with for selfish purposes. They might have had a link to that because they themselves left Britain to seek freedom and they wouldn’t want what they and their ancestors work for to be gone with a signature on a piece of paper.
3. I do think that the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today might have something to do with their previous colonization because almost all countries are based on tradition even if the government isn’t exactly the same as it was 100 years ago it would be very close to it if that form of government actually worked.

The reason I say that is because the countries now have new leaders and what happened in the past the new leaders could recover from. I know it may take a little time to do so but I think enough time has passed for them to start over. And also countries have more money now and there are new technologies that can be used to expand their economic and political state. So I think the countries have more opportunity to do more for their county.

1.The Europeans colonized during 1800’s because the industrial revolution made them become short on natural resources, and so as a result they had to go to Africa to get what they needed. I think that they also did to get Congo and to trade and sell the slaves. One thing that they valued was rubber from the trees that grew there.

2.I think that America did not get involved with Africa because they didn’t need the resources that Africa had to offer. Also I think that the Americans stayed away from Africa to avoid conflicts with them. They also might not of colonized Africa because they were a little busy fighting each other in war.

3.No, I don’t think that the countries current political state has anything to do with their colonization. I only say no because the countries now have new leaders and new people in charge. And so the bad mistakes that the old leaders made the new ones can learn from.

1. I think Europeans colonized Africa in the 1800’s because of the industrial revolution made the Europeans have a shortage in natural resources like Gas, and rubber and petroleum.
2. I think American stayed away from Asia and Africa in the 19th century because of all the wars over the resources and land and because America didn’t need the resources they just fought a war and we didn’t have a strong enough army to go into war anyway.
3. I think the current economic and politician state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today may have something to do with the previous colonization because some of the countries didn’t really have a stable government. They had a lot of resources from importing and exporting from the Europeans that they didn’t have anymore.

1. Europeans colonized Africa in the 1800’s because the wanted more land. Also they needed more recourses, such as oil, rubber, and petroleum because after the industrial revolution many of them were lost, and they wanted to gain them back.
2. I think American stayed away from Africa and Asia in the 19th century partly because they were a new forming country. They couldn’t risk war, or they would probably fall apart. Also they had more than enough recourse in North America, so there wasn’t really a reason to take the long journey all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, when they had all that stuff in America.
3. Yes, I think that the state of the economics and politics in sub Saharan states was influenced by the colonization. I think this is because the Europeans stole many of their natural resources, which were building blocks of a civilization. After they gained control back, they had to recover from their current state. Because they were still figuring out how to run government while everyone else had pretty much figured that out, it left them behind all the other countries, leaving them in their current state.

I think the Europeans colonized Africa because they wanted to be the big colonizers of Africa, and so they can work for them and find resources for them, and do whatever they asked the Africans to do.
I think other countries colonized and carved up Africa, so they didn’t want to go through them or fight them out of the way for the Africans to slave for them; instead they took and sold their resources to other countries.
I think that the current economic and political state that many sub-Saharan countries are in today might have something to do with their previous colonization because the Africans were colonized bossed around, and were even abused by Belgians in the resource-rich Congo. Belgians extracted tons of rubber, copper and ivory. Those villages who didn't harvest enough rubber would have children or sometimes women lose a hand. During this time King Leopold owned the Congo, until 1908 when the outrages over such treatment forced him to give it up. People in Africa might not have forgotten that and some probably think it could happen again so Africa could change economically or politically by now.

. i think America stayed away from Africa and Asia during the 19th Century because there was slavelry going on at the time and they did not want to be cought up in that mess so they tried to stay away as long as possiable. I also think thats Africa was scared that if they went anywhere near Asia then they would be treated like crap and not be "happy" and they would really never be free. there might have also been the idea of disease's going around so they wanted to stay away from that.

1.) The Belgians extracted tons of rubber, copper and ivory. SO the reason why Europeans colonized Afra was so that they could get good land and resources.
2.) I think that America stayed away from Africa during the 19th century becuase we were scared to start imperializing with them at this time.
3.) i think that it does have something to do with it because in africa now there are many abandoned kids that have no food or a shelter, this could be an issue that was brought on through thinks that had happened early in history. It seems to me that africa has never have a really stable economy.

1. I think that Europeans wanted more control then they had. That’s the whole idea of imperialism-expanding their way of thinking to conquer areas. The Europeans had the most power of all people, so now it was just a fight over WHICH European power could conquer and expand the most. When colonizing, they could force their religion, language, culture (ect.) without it being to obvious. They could present them with a better way of life but secretly hide their ideas in that way of life.
2. The United States had other things to be worrying about in the 19th century then how powerful their ruling was. We were working on the details of our government: and more problems over seas weren’t what we wanted or needed. The other countries decided to add that to the list of things they needed to be concerned with, but the U.S. was smart enough to realize they have enough going on back home.
3. I think that the colonization that was done to people who weren’t familiar to it could’ve hurt their chances for a stable economy. They were going on with their lives in a pretty sufficient way until the Europeans came along and told them what was right and what was wrong. It could’ve hurt their chances of forming their own government and building an economy that works for them.
