15. I think soldiers went back to war after being injured because they felt loyal to the army. They felt like it was their responsibility to fight for their country. Others may have felt like it was the only place where they knew they belonged or were appreciated. Some might have been following tradition that ran in their family to be in the army. Or it's possible that they were needed so badly they felt like they had no choice but to return.

1. I think Vicar didn’t tell the other guys, like Trench, Willoughby, and Jack, that he thought he saw Harry ride off after a spy because he only saw the back of Harry and might not have known if it was really him. Another reason that he didn’t say anything was that he sent Harry a white feather and the other guys would have thought he was crazy. Finally, I think that Vicar couldn’t really recognize Harry because he hadn’t shaved for a long time and Harry’s hair was really long.

7. My first impression of shell shock was that I felt very sad for them. I didn’t see what was funny about the people’s shell shock as Mr. Wickersham said it was. I think that some incidences were that severe because some of the people couldn’t even walk, where as other people with shell shock were fine until they saw something. For instance, there was a person in the movie that freaked out when he saw an enemies’ hat. My reaction to shell shock was that I felt very sad for all the soldiers who had it. I think that a form of shell shock still happens today because some soldiers have nightmares and even things that are even worse. I knew about shell shock in my past, but I didn’t know what it was called.

6. Jack decided to end it with Ethne towards the end of Four Feathers. Jack does this because he realizes that Harry should really be with her. Jack knows that Ethne always liked Harry more than himself, and he just wanted the best for Ethne, as he loved her. What really motivates Jack to end it with Ethne is how much of a good friend Harry is to Jack. Harry saved Jack in the desert without even taking credit. Also, they have been friends for a long time. Jack wants to be a good friend to Harry, so he breaks up with Ethne.

My first impression of shell shock was disturbed. It was disturbing to know that some people had to deal with the horrors of war and kill another man. People were committed to Sanitariums, where a pioneering technique known as psychotherapy was used. It was also known as “the talking cure”, because patients talked about what they were feeling, which helped majorly, especially in the case of Wilfred Owen, who was committed to a Sanitarium after his time in World War 1. He suffered from shell shock, but psychotherapy helped him dramatically. Although I was disturbed by shell shock, I found it amazing that talking about it using psychotherapy gave people a push to recover from the horrors of the Great War.

4. I think the reason soldiers didn't rebel to the harsh conditions because of what they were fighting there. They were ighting for their wives, their children, the soldier next to them, his family- rebeling would feel betraying. Also, they were used to the generlals being the higher power. Standing up to them would take massive amounts of courage.
9. Sassoon put into poems what most soldiers couldn't even put into words. So I think the fact that soldiers could read this and feel exacly what he was describing, was skmethin powerful. I think somegeberals wouldn't really like his writings because they only showed the horrors of war. And this could be offensive.

6. Do you think there was a deeper meaning behind why Ethne decided to marry Jack? Maybe she felt bad for him becuase he was blind? Or maybe he was a last resort because Harry was surely gone by then?

I think Ethne just married Jack because He had been a good friend to her when she was worried about Harry. She had no idea where Harry went and she probably thought he wouldn't be back, and so she married Jack since he was always there with her on her side.

I believe Ethne married Jack not because she felt bad for him, but because he was basically the next best thing. As you saw towards the end of the movie, Ethne was still in love with Harry, but didn’t think she would see or hear from him again. So she decided to marry Jack. He was Harry’s best friend and very similar to Harry. I think Ethne believed marrying Jack would be the closest she would ever be to Harry again.

David Bellefleur Q15: I think that soldiers went back to the army because of the men they left behind. Even after they were injured, they thought they were lucky and had to go back to fight until it was over or until they died. If they were mentally injured, people might have thought that going back to fight would get rid of some of the guilt, or maybe they thought that but it turned out being the complete opposite.

Why couldn't soldiers speak their minds about how the war was going without getting punished? First, this was an era where people were very proud to serve their countries. Wearing a military uniform and being a soldier was an honor. It was also a good job. There weren’t a lot of other ways to earn a living besides being on a farm or in isolated locations. This was a way for young men to see the world. People didn’t question their government or their leaders like they do today. Also, we didn’t have communication like we do today. There was no T.V or reporters broadcasting from the site. A lot of the information people received was propaganda, pro-military, and pro-government and may have not been received in a timely manner. The leaders usually came to power through military means such as winning battles and previous wars. Most soldiers were fiercely loyal. Therefore, when people spoke against the military, or their leader, they were quickly punished. From the Great War and World War II, we learned a lot of the consequences of following someone without questioning. This was one of the biggest lessons from these wars.

My first impression of shell shock was I knew people be in shock and unstable because but I didn’t expect men to act kind of crazy. And my reaction was sad and I pitied the men for being so brave to war and coming back so very fragile. For example the man who shot a man in the mouth had came back home with a mouth twitch, one man was so messed up every time he saw a red hat he thought about the war and become hysterical, another man hid under the bed anytime he heard the word bomb. It was really sad to see those men shake and become ill in their mind because of war. I think this still happens today, and I think as long as war and bombs and artillery and such are being used in our world, shell shock will being a mental pain that our soldiers will unfortunately have to bare with. The only thing I knew was that soldiers had nightmares but I never knew such a disease like shell shock could be wore in human mind.

I do think there was a deeper meanig behind why Ethne decided to marry Jack. I think that since Harry was gone, then Jack was her last resort. I don't think she expected Harry to come back, so it wouldn't hurt to marry Jack instead. I don't think it was because he was blind because they were sending each other love letters before she was even aware that he was blind, so I don't think that was a reason. However, I don't think she was sincerely in love with Jack. She just used him because there were no other options at that point.

6. For 6 I believe that Ethne married Jack because she felt bad for him and she wanted to marry somebody since Harry had left. Maybe she was lonely and just wanted a companion and knew in a way that Jack cared about her. In a way I believe that Ethne knew that Jack liked her because he was always sending her letters and right after Harry had left Jack had immediately started a relationship with her so in a way she maybe knew. That’s my understanding on the whole issue.
7. My first impression of Shell Shock was that it was sad to see people in that state. Some of them couldn’t even walk because the case was so severe. It looked pretty severe from my point, I could not imagine living like that for the reminder of my life. I don’t think it happens as much today because I don’t believe war is as gory as war back then so maybe there isn’t as many cases as back then but I do still believe that it goes on today.

7.My first impression of shell shock was horror and extreme sadness.I never would've thought that it was THAT severe.I was extremely horrified by what I saw; seeing grown men (in the ARMY) act that way. Before, you would think of them as one of the bravest men in the world, to go out and fight for their country that way, risking their lives. But then you see them...and you see that they have to be taken care of as if they were a frightened child, who just woke up from a nightmare. It was very sad as well, for I think it's truly terrible that something like war could ruin someone's life like that, and make their life a living hell.

8.I think that Jack broke up with Ethne because after finding out that Harry read their letters, I presume that frankly, he felt pretty guilty for trying to marry his (ex?)fiance behind his back. Also, I think he realized that Harry and Ethne were truly in love with each other, and no matter how much he loved Ethne, I think he knew that he shouldn't get between them.

My first impression to shell shock was that it was depressing. They went out there to fight as strong men, and came back with muscle spasms and phobias. I knew what shell shock was, but I didn't think it was that severe that people could physically be effected by it.

7. My first impression of shell shock was in disbelief, I didn’t know that shell shock was so sever. I thought that it would just be mental problems that people would have from the war, but after watching the video I realized that people actually had really bad physical problems from it. It was very sad that these men had seen thing that made them so unstable that their bodies could not function like “normal” people any more. I think that things like this still happen today but not as often as we take better care of our troops for the most part. I knew that this kind of thing happened, I have heard about cases during Vietnam but some of them seemed overblown and I didn’t believe that it happened that much until I saw that video we watched in class.

When I first learned about shell shock, I couldn't believe this actually happened and I can't imagine what it must be like for these men who get it. For them to go into the war confident and brave and come out of it relying on others must be terrible. Originally I thought it was somewhat of an exaggeration the way it was being described. I had no idea that shell shock was actually as serious and severe as it was made out to be. Shell shock is quite disturbing to me because I just can't even picture what the soldiers are experiencing and what they have to suffer with. What really upsets me is that these men who get shell shock did nothing to deserve it. They went into the war to fight for their country and had to come out of it as a sick, dependent person. Another thing that is upsetting is that this probably still occurs today because soldiers in war still experience the same things that soldiers did 100 years ago. This means that soldiers can still get shell shock and have to deal with the same thing which must be horrible.

If the Turks were to take responsibility for the Armenian Genocide, I don’t think too much would change. Since anyone directly involved is either dead or very old, I don’t think it would be as big of a deal as it would have been back then. It would show how the government there has improved, and how they know what happened was wrong. It may cause people to have more respect for the current government, but I think its well overdue, therefore wouldn’t be that big of a deal. Everyone knows they were at fault, so they should have owned up to that by now.

I think that Jack broke up with Ethne because he cares a lot about her and he also cares a lot about Harry. When Harry comes to see him he tells him how he was always jealous and he knew how much they loved each other and he knew how much he loved Ethne. I think since Jack was his best friend, who saved his life when he didn't need to, and had always been there for him and Ethne was the one he loved in another way. I think he would have felt guilty taking Ethne when he knew it would cause her a great deal of unhappiness. I think Jack was a really good friend for doing that, obviously he did not want to because if he loved her, and he had to loose her to someone else by his own choice that is difficult but as they say if you love something, let it go; that was what Jack did. He was good a good man for that too.

17. If the United States had been involved in the First World War then a lot more lives would have been saved instead of just gaining profit. Most of the Bloodshed could have ended if America helped out the Allied. Although America might not be as economically high if they didn’t support both sides with supplies in trade for money. Even thought America joined in, both sides would have lost many casualties.

When I first saw shell shock I thought of it as being a tragic experience. For people to have to live through it would be hardly possible to me. Not only do the victims have to deal with it but their family and friends have to look at their loved one each and every day. When these people have to see a person with shell shock it probably crushes their hearts. I knew things like this could happen but I never would have thought that it could be so severe. For example I wouldn’t think that from one shooting in the face, someone could have a face glitch for the rest of his or her life.

I do think that this happens these days. People are still in bad situations such as wars and it can mentally hurt them. Being in war right now, with many of our fighters being young males, they can be affected strongly with shell shock. Fighters don’t know when they might have to do something that could give them a phobia, which I think causes them to still get shell shock today.

I knew this was possible because of movies and books. Like I said before, I didn’t know it was as serious as the video showed me. Thankfully, the amounts of shell shock patients have reduced, although it could always get worse.

I believe that the soldiers in the Great War did not rebel earlier because of the awful living conditions because of all of the repercussions. First, they had been told that they were fighting for the freedom and safety of their friends and families. If they gave up, not only would they disappoint them, but it would mean that they were cowards. Back then, it was not as acceptable for men to be afraid, they were expected to tough it out if you were a “real” man. Next, a person who rebels against his commanding officer was at risk of being prosecuted by the army and possibly getting a dishonorable discharge, which would make going home very difficult. I also think a large number of the soldiers probably really believed that the people in charge knew what they were doing, especially at the beginning of the Great War. So, most soldiers, who had probably never fought in a war, might have just believed that was how it was. Who wants to be the first to admit they can not handle it?

When I saw that video about shell shock I was shocked myself. I have never seen or heard a sickness like that before. It was also pretty interesting, to learn about new thins, but I thought people where real brave to go out in the army and know that war is very dangerous, and know that they might get hurt. I first thought that shell shock was probably no big deal but then when I watched that video I then knew that it was really serious. I also thought at first that you could just get treatments by just going to the doctor but I don't think that will work. And I was real surprised when the man in the video that had got shell shock treatment when they were literally shocking the man with electricity. I knew there were a lot of disorders in the world but I never heard of this one before. So that is what I think about shell shock.

7. My first impression of shell shock was kind of humorous. It was all these grown men, acting like they were maybe four years old. But then I started to realize that they have to go through most of this stuff every day until they get better, or even if they get better. I didn’t think that war could have such an effect on people. I thought that the men would just have bad dreams, or maybe have a little mental health issues. I never knew, up until the video, that this could happen to someone. Like when the one man only responded to the word bomb, it was really sad because he was so helpless. Also the man who could barely walk was very helpless to. I think it’s sad what war can do to a man.

Question 2

Soldiers would continue fighting despite the great affects of damage, and horror that war causes because the soldiers feel responsible for their country. Soldiers know the risks of war and what damages that it can cause as well as the personal effects. There may be some soldiers on the other hand, who may be scared, or not willing to fight for their country, but their country requires them to join the army once they come of age. For example, when children turn eighteen in Israel, it is a state requirement to join the army. Even if someone does not want to take the responsibility, they have to go through it unless they move away, or have mental disabilities (although most often they can find a place for you). Places like Israel that has a small population, their government needs to prepare for the worst and requires people to go on the army. So soldiers continue fighting despite the things that could go wrong because of loyalty to their country, and knowing and doing what is right (even if their country requires it).

My first impression of shell shock was that it was crazy that someone that is completely normal could be changed that greatly. I think that it was very severe although I’m sure there were minor cases of Shell Shock. I thought that it almost seemed fake because of how weirdly they were acting. I think that it could have been treated though because it wasn’t a disease like the flu. I think that stuff like this does happen today, as long as someone sees something so bad that it would cause their brain to react like that. I heard of people going crazy in or coming back from the Vietnam War. Today, I think they must have better methods of curing Shell Shock and you may be able to be either partially or mostly cured in a year or two, but like the video said they may never be fully recovered from Shell Shock.

Even though women couldn’t fight in the Great War I do think that they are valuable as soldiers now. I say this because women are soldiers now and some of them do a pretty decent job. Also women are doctors in the war now and without them a lot of soldiers would be dead, so I’m sure they value the women that save their lives. Also are supporting wives and some men in the world would go crazy if they didn’t have their wives by their sides. Women are very valuable now women hold big positions in the country they are judges, lawyers, officers, mayors, and governors. I would say that women are really valued way more than back then. some people don’t value women like they should, but they should, women even save lives now therefore women are and need to be respected because they are very valuable.

7. I think that Shell shock I think it is severe, and the way doctors used to cure it back then, it was dangerous, and it wasn’t thought well, because giving people shocks to the brain could just hurt them more, affect their brain, and/or killed them. I think that it isn’t fair that soldiers suffered and see things that cause them to suffer more like the shell shock. I knew there was the same kind of shock, but for the Vietnam War. People think it’s funny on how they react, or act but, the soldiers are heroes that have gone to a lot outside their countries, and that don’t deserve this in their own land. I thought there was only one kind of shock, but now I know that maybe many soldiers have been affected in all the wars throughout history, and that it gets worse as time passes.

Question 18
There are many reasons for some countries being favor for the treaties made during World War I and other countries being against them. Some reasons for being in favor of a treaty would be that your country is that you have no more people to go and fight, you have no more ammunition, you have no more money, or your country is destroyed. There are also many reasons for being against treaties; some of those may be because you want to win, you have lost so many people, resources, and money you want to win, you think your cause must be completed, or you and your country has lost so much a piece of paper could never fix it.

My first impression of shell shock was amazed that something like that could actually happen to someone and the doctors would use shock therapy to the brain to help them be normal again it was very dangerous. I didn’t think something like that could be so severe the guy who responded to nothing but the word ‘bomb’ and then he would go hiding under the closest thing he would find. Or how the sight of a uniform would frighten a guy. I think there are still come cases of shell sock but its just not well know like it was during the war I never ever head about it before and maybe there just getting better at treating it. So there are less cases of it or its just very minor.

1. I think Vicar did not tell Trench, Willoughby, and Jack because if Vicar told them that then they would thought that he went crazy due to the war and the condition they are in as in the weather in the desert and other things.
2. I think that soldiers would keep fighting even all the damage and horror that war can do because if soldiers thought that if they can survive this, they can go home and lose all this damage but the horror will be with them throughout the rest of their lives. For example shell shock. Shell Shock is what a soldier endures after war, for example twitching or nightmares or even losing the ability to talk. If I had to fight in the army, I would probably be a person who sends out radio transmissions because I hate war and all the violence in it and if I had to ender war I would kill myself due to all the madness in it.

1) Why didn’t vicar tell the other guys (Trench, Willoughby, Jack) that he thought he saw harry ride off after a spy.
Mostly I thing vicar didn’t tell the others because he was unsure of if it was really harry or one of the slaves they were using. Another reason is maybe that he vicar didn’t want to believed that harry had been there and had really not a banded his solders. Since harry was with Abou and they both were leaving that harry was really just one of the Africans and that Vicar knew harry enough to think he wouldn’t be around colored people.

Do you think Vicar thought it was all right to kill a man if he prayed to God while doing it.
yes i think he thought that is was ok because he was repenting as he killed so he thought thay god would forgive him because he was truly sorry but he knew that he sad to do it. i think that he thought that god would feel his sorrow and and understand why he had to do it. i think that praying to god was his strength and he knew he needed/ had to do it.

I’m choosing to answer question #3. I think that soldiers continued to fight in war even though they knew what it could do to you in the long wrong because they felt it was their duty to fight for their country, and if they were not to fight they would let their country down and they didn’t want that. I have family members that went into war and have suffered through some of the many war tragedies. They have been able to come through their problems and they are perfectly fine and living and they are happy that they had a chance to fight for our freedom. So I believe people as in soldiers keep fighting even though they know the damages that could happen because they know in the long wrong they will be proud of what they had to do.

4. Why didnt any of the soldiers of the great war rebel earlier due to awful living condions?

I think they didnt rebel earlier becaue they didnt have the resoucres to do nor the people. Another reason they didnt do it earlier is because they were afraid of what might happen to them if they didnt win or over threw the empire. Another reason is because they were watched all day and night and worked all day and night so they were tired

Even though women couldn’t fight in the Great War, I think that they still were just as valuable as the men were. Women were thee to support and they were there as aids. I say this because women were decent aids and also women are now quite successful in life. We today have doctors as well as big supporters. While men went to war, women were supporting the men all along the way. When some are down, women were there to cheer them up. When men did not do well, the women we there to tell them that they did a good job and that they will do better next time. Nowadays however women are more successful and are big achievers.
